lately, reading my blog, you would think the intent is to post reviews for movies … so many movies lately, but they’ve been good!

so saturday evening i was a total bum. i was tired and didn’t feel like going up to the city for some drinks so i settled in to watch maria full of grace. i had high expectations because of what i had read and what friends told me about the movie and in spite of those expectations, the movie was really good.

the basic storyline follows maria alvarez in her quest to overcome unfortunate circumstances surrounding her life in columbia. she has a disrespectful boss and quits her job. she becomes pregnant by a boyfriend she doesn’t love. her family pressures her to work and forgo her income because her sister became pregnant at a young age with a father who is seemingly MIA. maria meets a new boy at some town celebration who introduces the idea of becoming a mule to her. initially hesitant, she latches on to the idea during her day trip to bogota and meets Javier, and older man responsible for sending several women into the state with stomachs full of drugs.

maria comes across as a particularly savvy and courageous young woman, able to maintain her composure during stressful trials and tribulations upon her arrival in the united states.

overall, definitely a good movie. enjoy the flick, the lead actress definitely deserved her oscar nod.
