finally! a major pub espouses my opinion on GOOG

June 30th, 2006 · 1 Comment

finally, a business week article on GOOG’s lagging ventures over the past few years. i don’t feel like getting into it very much right now, but there’s so much hype and adoration of a company which has 98% of its revenue coming from a single source of business: advertising. the various google ventures over the past few years have tanked, at least relative to what a success is nowadays for the major players (ms, yahoo, goog). i’m just glad to see that people are finally starting to notice. it’s not that their ideas suck, it’s just their beta product process and poor human factors approach stifles staying power with their audiences. google maps has it pretty right (which my roomate works on coincidentally) but the rest of the new services leave much to be desired (and satisfied by competitors). i love mayer’s comment about how people solving the davinci code puzzles discovered google features they wouldn’t have known about otherwise. gee, whose fault is that? perhaps the poor integration of capabilities is a serious problem…. msn and yahoo don’t do it particularly well, but at least it is noticeable.

that’s all for now. working from home today… putting together my 4th design document… it’s nice that once you start doing these essential software engineering docs, not only do you get better at achieving the critical mass to effectively drive a project, you also do it faster. it’s too bad that they don’t teach these things in computer science programs so graduates actually know how to engineer something.

31 days and counting until graduation! whooooooooohoooooooo

Wow, you’re graduating already? It seems like you started school not too long ago. Congratulations! :)
