breadcrumbs from social networks of a bygone era

April 22nd, 2008 · No Comments

so i was just clicking through to some of my friends’ blogs and realized that i had not logged into my xanga account for quite some time. i figured i would login, which required remembering a password from so long ago i’m surprised i could recall it. after logging in, i clicked off to my various “xanga” buddies and noticed that all the blogs except for one had basically turned stale. this got me thinking about the various breadcrumbs we leave behind in our “online lives”. some of it is desirable, and other parts are not. it’s a very different type of history than one’s personal history where you can elect to admit or omit details of your choosing. err and be cached and your online reputation may be doomed.

interestingly, some have recognized this niche concern and have started online reputation management services. thankfully, i don’t think i’ll need to enlist those services.
